Summer Reading
More Than Two Million Minutes of Reading Logged This Summer!
Sno-Isle Libraries' summer reading program, provides a fun and engaging way for kids and teens to maintain and improve their reading skills while on summer break. Research indicates that youth involved in summer activities that include reading, learning, and hands-on discovery begin the new school year better prepared for school success than those who are not.
We recognize the importance of avoiding the Summer Slide, a term describing the decline in reading ability and other academic skills that occur over the summer months when school is on recess. Explore Summer participants are encouraged to continue reading and attend fun and educational events to maintain or improve reading ability and be prepared for the following school year.
The Foundation provided $21,000 for Summer Reading. The 2024 theme “Adventure Begins at Your Library” invited youth to explore, create art, participate in scavenger hunts, and have fun at the library. Funding from the Foundation helped purchase prize books for kids and teens who read for 10 hours or more, including 1,700+ prize books to participants at 15 Boys & Girls Clubs. Funds were also used to support summer activities throughout the district. In 2024, Summer Reading had a total of 6,308 program finishers with 2.2 million minutes read and 10,500 people attended a total of 346 events.
